Installation
This section describes the steps you need to take to install the WireTracks
iCove.
Installing
the iCove
To install the iCove, follow these steps:
- Use a stud finder to find the stud to which you will attach the
iCove.
Note: It is highly recommended to install the iCove directly
above an electrical outlet.
- Use the wallboard saw to open a small hole in the wall so you can
precisely locate the stud.
- Place the template over the hole, using the stud to determine precise
placement.
- Carefully cut out the wallboard, leaving a clean square opening
where you will install the iCove.
- Remove the iCove from the packaging.
- If the wall uses standard 2x4 framing with ½" wallboard,
place double-stick tape against the back wall of the iCove. If you
have 2x6 framing or thicker wallboard, place double-stick tape against
the side of the iCove that will attach to the stud.
- Remove the tape and carefully insert the iCove into wall.
- Reinforce the installation by screwing the front tabs to the studs.
Electrifying
the iCove
To install electrical for the iCove, follow these steps:
- Turn off the electricity to the junction box that you will use
to provide power to the iCove.
- Attach the included electrical junction box, electrical outlet,
and any Romex to the bottom of the iCove Cachebox. Make sure the Romex
is long enough to reach the electrical outlet.
- Remove the faceplate and electrical outlet from the junction box
that you will tap into.
- Run the Romex down the wall and pull it through the junction box.
- Install the iCove Cachebox.
- Connect the Romex to the electrical outlet of the junction box
and reinstall.
- Turn on the electricity and test the power to the iCove.
Attaching
Conduit to the iCove
Conduit protects low-voltage wiring from damage and simplifies installation
of new wiring in the future. For example, if you are installing an Apple
iPod in the WireTracks iCove, you might need to change the wiring if
Apple changes their iPod wiring standard in the future. Conduit provides
a permanent path for future upgrades and is highly recommended.
To install conduit for the iCove, follow these steps:
- Obtain ¾" or 1" (recommended) conduit from your
local home improvement center and at least two fittings.
- Remove one of the conduit knockouts from the iCove Cachbox.
- Select from the following:
· If you are attaching the conduit to a WireTracks channel,
install a WireTracks Conduit Connector at the bottom of the wall,
beneath the iCove and attach the conduit to the connector.
· If you are attaching the conduit to a retrofit outlet box,
install the outlet box beneath the iCove according to the instructions
provided by the manufacturer and attach the conduit to the outlet
box.
- Cut the other end of the conduit to a length that will attach to
the iCove Cachebox knockout opening and attach a fitting.
- Fish a piece of twine or rope through the conduit and secure it
against something solid on the side that is attached to the WireTracks
conduit connector or outlet box.
- Pull the piece of rope through the knockout opening in the iCove
Cachebox and install the iCove Cachebox. Once installed, use the twine
to guide the conduit through the knockout opening and secure the fitting
with a nut.
Note: It is recommended to leave the twine in place. This will
make it easier to fish wires through the conduit later.
Attaching
Conduit and Electrifying the iCove
To install conduit and electrify the iCove, follow these steps:
- Turn off the electricity to the junction box that you will use
to provide power to the iCove.
- Install the iCove Cachebox:
· Pull the piece of rope through the knockout opening in the
iCove Cachebox and install the iCove Cachebox. If the Romex bunches
up, pull the slack through the electrical outlet.
· Once installed, use the twine to guide the conduit through
the knockout opening and secure the fitting with a nut.
Note: It is recommended to leave the twine in place. This will
make it easier to fish wires through the conduit later.
- Connect the Romex to the electrical outlet in the outlet box and
reinstall.
- Turn on the electricity and test the power to the iCove.
Installing
the Device
To install the device in the iCove, follow these steps:
- Locate the docking station for the device.
- Pull any signal cables that will be connected to the device through
the conduit and to their destination.
- Connect any power supplies to the electrical outlet in the bottom
of the iCove Cachebox.
- Plug the cables into the back of the docking station.
- Install the shelf and docking station, routing any cables through
the cable slot on the shelf.
- Use double-stick tape or Velcro to secure the shelf to the iCove.
- Install the device into the docking station and verify that it
fits properly.
- Secure the docking station to the shelf using double-stick tape
or Velcro.
Installing
the Frame
To install the frame, follow these steps:
- Obtain a frame is at least 1" thick and is the correct size
for the iCove (for example, 5x7" or 8x10").
- Secure the frame over the iCove with double-stick tape or Velcro.
After you have determined the proper placement, use a jeweler's screwdriver
to secure the frame from the back side.
- You're finished.
